Countertops

A & J Woodworking, Inc. provides a large selection of countertops to fit any lifestyle or design preference. Today's marketplace offers countertops in a variety of materials such as man-made laminates or natural stones or a combination of materials which enhances functionality and design possibilities.  Other considerations when choosing your countertop include maintenance, durability, color, and affordability.

A & J Woodworking, Inc. is a certified fabricator/installer of Corian®. Corian is a blend of natural minerals and pure acrylic resin that makes an ideal surface for kitchen countertops, bath vanity tops, sinks, and shower surrounds.  Corian is solid all the way through, so its surface is completely renewable, usually with ordinary abrasive cleaners.  Corian offers a full ten-year limited warranty against fabrication and installation defects. Corian is now available in over 130 colors. Check it out at www.corian.com.

Zodiaq ™ is an engineered material that combines the beauty and durability of quartz crystals blended with the DuPont innovation that brings easy care, stain resistance and lasting value to your home.  Because quartz is one of nature's strongest materials, Zodiaq is incredibly durable and resists both heat and scratches.  Zodiaq is a smooth, nonporous surface and will retain its luster for many years without the need for sealants or waxes.  Uses of Zodiaq include countertops, wet bars, vanity tops and tub and shower surrounds.  Zodiaq is available in 39 colors and is backed by a ten-year limited warranty when installed by a Certified Fabricator/ Installer like A & J Woodworking.  Visit www.zodiaq.com.

Granite is an igneous substance formed by the solidification of molten rock. It contains mainly feldspar and quartz. The color in a slab of granite comes from minerals and organic matter present when the granite was in its molten state. Granite makes a beautiful kitchen countertop and its durability makes it practical as well. Granite does not scratch under everyday use, and it is heat resistant. However, to protect the finish, hot pans should not be placed directly on a granite countertop. Granite is sealed at the time of fabrication and needs resealed depending on the amount of use. Granite is also used for bathroom countertops, desktops and fireplace surrounds.

Cultured marble is a man-made, chemically bonded, mineral filled polymeric material that is molded and hardened to a solid material in a variety of shapes. Cultured marble is a nonporous surface that resists staining. Applications include vanity tops and shower and tub surrounds. A wide selection of styles and color choices are available.

Laminate countertops provide the widest selection of colors and finishes for the lowest price. Laminates are available in solid colors, patterns, wood grains, metal and honed finishes. Laminate is a strong material where decorative and core papers are combined with resin and fused together, then applied to a strong substrate. However, laminate is susceptible to heat, so hot pans should not be placed directly on the countertop. You must also be careful and use a cutting board when using a knife because any cuts or nicks can not be repaired. Laminates can be used on virtually any interior surface, making it a good choice for residential and commercial applications. Laminate is cost effective and is relatively inexpensive to replace if your style or taste changes.  See the many color and design possibilities at www.formica.com or www.wilsonart.com.

Confused by the many choices available?  Consider the pros and cons of each surface and see how each one fits into your individual lifestyle.   Is a seamless appearance important in your decision?  Perhaps Corian or other solid surface like Hanex would be a good choice for you.  Would you rather have a unique color and design and still have a very durable countertop?  Maybe granite will be what you choose. Is budget your most important consideration?  If so, a laminate countertop might fit well into your kitchen plans.
